Is Mangosteen Safe for Dogs? What DermaXan® Actually Does to Pet Skin
If you've come across Curobuddy's products, you've probably noticed that our key ingredient isn't something you'd find in most pet skincare: Mangosteen Skin Extract — specifically, a standardised extract called DermaXan®. It raises a fair question: is mangosteen actually safe for dogs, and what does it do?
Here's the honest answer.
What Is Mangosteen?
Mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana) is a tropical fruit native to Southeast Asia. While the sweet white flesh is the part people eat, the pericarp — the thick purple outer rind — is where the bioactive compounds are concentrated.
The pericarp contains high levels of xanthones, a class of polyphenols with well-documented antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties. These have been studied for use in human medicine and, more recently, in veterinary skincare.
What Is DermaXan®?
DermaXan® is a standardised mangosteen pericarp extract — meaning it's produced to a consistent specification, with a controlled concentration of active xanthones. Curobuddy uses this extract rather than raw mangosteen powder because standardisation matters for efficacy: a non-standardised extract can vary wildly in potency from batch to batch.
What Does It Do?
The xanthones in DermaXan® have three main effects relevant to skin health:
1. Antimicrobial action Xanthones inhibit the growth of common skin bacteria, including Staphylococcus species — the bacteria most commonly responsible for hot spots and pyoderma in dogs. This means the extract actively works against the infection, not just the symptoms.
2. Anti-inflammatory effect Xanthones reduce the production of inflammatory cytokines — the signalling molecules that cause redness, swelling, and pain. This is why pets treated with Regen Care Spray often show visible reduction in redness within the first 24–48 hours.
3. Wound repair support Research on mangosteen extract suggests it supports skin cell regeneration, helping wounds close faster and cleanly. This is particularly useful for hot spots, post-surgery wounds, and chronic skin breakdown in senior pets.
Is It Safe for Dogs and Cats?
Yes. The Mangosteen Skin Extract used in Curobuddy's products is applied topically (on the skin), not ingested. Topical application at the concentrations used in our formula has no known toxicity for dogs or cats.
The full ingredient list for Regen Care Spray is: Aqua, DermaXan® (G. mangostana pericarp extract), Sodium Benzoate, Potassium Sorbate. That's it. No alcohol, no parabens, no synthetic fragrance, no steroids.
Sodium Benzoate and Potassium Sorbate are preservatives used at trace levels — both are approved for use in food-grade applications and are well-tolerated even if licked in small amounts.
What About Eating Mangosteen?
The fruit flesh is generally considered safe for dogs in small amounts. The rind/pericarp is not recommended to be fed in raw or large quantities due to xanthone concentration. But again — Curobuddy's products are topical, not dietary.
The Bottom Line
DermaXan® Mangosteen Skin Extract is a science-backed, plant-based ingredient with genuine antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. It's not a wellness trend — there's real research behind why it works on compromised pet skin. And at the concentrations used in topical application, it's safe for dogs and cats of all ages, including puppies, senior pets, and post-surgery animals.
